The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley (BGCTNV) count on volunteers to meet the mission of the organization. BGCTNV offers a variety of possibilities for individuals, groups, and families to contribute to the mission and help youth in our community succeed.

Please Note:

  • BGCTNV does not accept court-ordered community service hours.
  • Applicants who have been terminated or asked to resign from the BGCTNV within 5 years are not eligible to volunteer.

Youth Volunteers (under 18): BGCTNV allows youth volunteers age 13-18. Applicants must fill out the online volunteer application and have a parent/guardian sign a Youth Volunteer Parental Consent Form. This form must be brought to the volunteer orientation or emailed here.  Please note, background checks are not conducted on youth volunteers. 

Family Volunteering: BGCTNV offers a number of opportunities for families to volunteer with the organization. Activities range from event set up and clean up, gardening, and special event duties. Families with children over the age of 6 are welcome to apply. Only one parent/guardian has to fill out the online application, and must indicate participating family members' names and ages.  

Group Volunteering: BGCTNV can accommodate group volunteer activities, such as club beautification or in alignment with college course work. All volunteers must fill out the Online Volunteer Application indicating group/organization affiliation. Orientations can be scheduled to meet the group's needs. Please email inquiries here. These types of volunteer opportunities must be scheduled four weeks in advance.

Volunteer Orientation: Attendance is mandatory for program and administrative volunteers. Orientation is held at the BGCTNV administrative office located in the Shafer Insurance Building at 1100 Marion Street, Suite 100, Knoxville, TN 37921.

  • Orientations are offered every Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. and Thursday at 4:00 p.m., lasting 30 minutes. The orientation includes BGCTNV history, mission, policies, and procedures.
  • After submitting the Online Volunteer Application, please email here to schedule a volunteer orientation.



  1. Submit the Online Volunteer Application. - These volunteer opportunities involve working with youth and handling sensitive information, which require volunteers to attend an orientation. At the orientation volunteers will be asked to sign a release to conduct a criminal background check. Please note, background checks are not conducted on youth volunteers.
  2. Attend volunteer orientation. - Email here to schedule your attendance to orientation.
  3. The background check will be processed after attending orientation. A schedule will be determined at the volunteer orientation or you will be contacted regarding your volunteer placement within 5-7 business days.

Program Volunteers

  • Play a key role by spending time with the youth on a consistent basis, helping with homework, reading, playing sports, music, dance, cooking, and attending field trips. 
  • Also, if volunteers have a special interest they want to share with youth we may be able to facilitate a learning environment.  

When and how often: During the school year, commit to an hour a week Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. During the summer, commit to an hour a week Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (May 25th- August 8th)

Administrative Volunteers

  • BGCTNV has volunteer opportunities working on projects, filing, and other administrative tasks.
  • Additionally, BGCTNV may be able to match your skills and knowledge to an organizational need.
  • This type of volunteer opportunity is not family friendly.

When and how often: Commit to an hour or more a week Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

  1. All volunteers must fill out the Online Volunteer Application.
    • Events that involve working with the youth will require volunteers to attend orientation and have a background check conducted. Please note, not all one-time events require attendance at a volunteer orientation.
    • Please email here or call 865-232-1176 to learn of upcoming one-time volunteer opportunities.
  2. Potential volunteers will receive a confirmation email of their application submission, as well as an email detailing the volunteer day.

Special Project Volunteers

  • These types of volunteer opportunities are a one-time commitment working with youth at a Club event or fundraising event. Activities vary by event, but may include set up and clean up, serving food, and duties to ensure the event runs smoothly.

  • Some special project volunteer opportunities are family friendly
  • BGCTNV can coordinate other group volunteer activities not listed as an event, and in alignment to the group’s interest. These types of volunteer opportunities must be scheduled four weeks in advance. Please send inquires here
